Single Origin, Certified Organic, Fair Trade Cold Pressed Cacao Powder (1kg) by Loving Earth.

Jam packed with antioxidants, magnesium and bliss nutrients that can help keep you energized, healthy and happy.

Loving Earth's Cacao Powder is made from an heirloom variety of unroasted Criollo Amazonico Cacao, grown in the Amazon rainforest of Satipo, Peru.  It contains up to twice the amount of antioxidants of traditional Cocoa Powder made from roasted beans.

Organic cacao (also known as original cocoa) is a power superfood that will leave you feeling happy and revitalised! Delicious and nutritious, eaten by the ancient Mayans, cacao is one of the highest sources of antioxidants and an excellent source of minerals - magnesium, sulphur, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, potassium and manganese plus some of the B Vitamins.

High in anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties with twice the amount of anti-oxidants compared to red wine, and more than three times the amount found in green tea.

Cacao is also a powerful mood booster - containing the important amino acid, tryptophan which makes serotonin - the neurotransmitter responsible for creating 'happy' feelings. Also contains other naturally occurring phytochemicals like theobromine - an aphrodisiac, phenylethylamine (PEA) – released when we fall in love, and anandamide - the ‘bliss' chemical.

Organic raw cacao nibs are cold pressed and then finely milled to produce cacao powder. A wonderful superfood - never heated above 40°C, so all of the cacao's natural goodness is retained.

Serving Suggestions: Use instead of conventional cocoa powder  Mix a tablespoon (or to taste) with your favourite smoothie, milkshake or chocolatey recipe to give a rich chocolatey taste e.g. cakes, biscuits, smoothies, ice creams, museli, desserts and hot chocolate.

The benefit of cacao powder vs conventional cocoa powder is that cacao is processed at a lower temperature from the cacao bean (same as the cocoa bean), though not treated with chemicals, alkalised or dutched.

    Ingredients: Certified Organic Cacao Powder

Store: in cool, dry cupboard away from direct sunlight.

    Origin: Peru
    Certification: ACO (Australian Certified Organic)

    Health Benefits: Antioxidants
Cacao beans contain 10 grams of flavonol antioxidants per 100 grams, which is an incredible 10%.

Research has also demonstrated that the antioxidants in cacao are highly stable and easily available to human metabolism. In the adjacent table you can see that cocoa powder has set the world record for antioxidants with nearly 4 times the amount of antioxidants as Goji Berries.

The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale was developed by the United States Department of Agriculture to measure the ability of antioxidants to absorb free radicals, which normally cause cell and tissue damage. The higher the ORAC score, the higher the level of antioxidants present in the food.

Magnesium for the Heart and Brain:
Cacao is the primary dietary source of magnesium, the most deficient mineral in western civilisation. Magnesium is the most important mineral for a healthy functioning heart. It also plays a key role in producing energy for the neurons in the brain from glucose. So when there is an abundance of magnesium the brain works with clarity and focus.

    Mood elevators and Anti-depressants:
Cacao is a great source of serotonin, dopamine, anandamide and phenylethylamine (PEA), four well-studied neurotransmitters, which are associated with feelings of well being and help alleviate depression. Both PEA and Anandamide (the bliss chemical) are found in abundance in the brains of happy people and are particularly released when we are feeling happy. Both of these nuerotransmitters are present in cacao in large enough quanitities to affect the brain and lift our moods. Cacao also contains monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO Inhibitors) that keep neurotransmitters in the bloodstream for longer without being broken down.

We have all experienced the positive feelings associated with eating chocolate, now we have access to pure unadulterated chocolate in the form of organic cacao. This is much more potent than the processed chocolate and doesn't have any sugar or dairy products blocking the positive effects of all the goodies in cacao. My experience is that eating 11 cacao beans is enough to experience a blissful sense of well being.

Source: Satipo is a region that sits at the edge of the Amazon basin at the base of the Andes mountain range. In this area we work with 4 small producer groups that are grouped under the umbrella association of cacao producers of Satipo that consists of 164 families in total.

    Fairly Traded:

The cacao from the premium Criollo cacao bean has been bought from the Satipo Cocoa Co-operative, Peru for more than 15% above the fairtrade price. Loving Earth also supports the Satipo Community by helping them add as much value as possible to materials at the point of origin.

This association is certified organic by Control Union and is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, this ensures the cacao is certified organic and fairly traded.

Each family has approximately 2 hectares of criollo cacao and coffee bushes grown in the understory of larger trees - mainly coconut and other forest trees. The cacao of this region is known locally as the queen of cacao due to its fine aroma and distinctive flavour that is typical of South American criollos. With the increasing demand for this quality organic cacao the association has been steadily growing introducing more producers to the organic farming methods and post harvest processing techniques.

In partnership with the association we use a facility where they can process the cacao beans into licor and then press the licor into powder and butter. If you have tried our cacao products you will have experienced the end product is vastly superior both in flavour, aroma and nutritional content to other cocoa products on the market made from roasted beans. Due to this unique and high quality finished product the producers are able to charge a price for their product, which is significantly higher than the standard fair trade cacao price.
